Charlie- Female Guinea Pig- Adoption Status on Hold

Picture
_
Charlie is a female guinea pig who was born in ~ 2010. She has a super sweet personality. She's a little nervous within the first minute of being picked up, but quickly starts chortling/cooing and nuzzling her head under her foster mom's chin and becomes relaxed. She will let you know if she's nervous, but she gets over it... we think she will quickly trust anyone who treats her right. She has a good nose and ears, is really curious to find out about other pigs, and likes to stick her nose in the air and smell whatever she happens to be curious about. She has a great appetite, and has eaten everything we've given her. Charlie came to the rescue with a past injury. Her four legs had been previously broken and they re-healed awkwardly prior to relinquishment. While they did heal awkwardly, she can move around quite well. Her back legs drag a bit when she walks but the front ones are strong and she doesn't appear to be in pain.  Charlie likes to spend time in her pigloo, but also seems to enjoy all of the hay in her cage. She just dives right in and starts eating. All in all, she is a really sweet piggy.  She is genuinely grateful for all of the love she gets and she will be a great addition to a loving home! Charlie is a foster piggie of West MI Critter Haven. She is fostered near Ann Arbor. For more information on adopting Charlie please contact us. Adopters must be at least 18 years old. Charlie is on hold as a new foster pet so that we can assess her health prior to placing her for adoption. More updates will be posted soon!

Dante- Lionhead House Rabbit- Adoption Status On Hold

Picture
Dante (aka Snowflake) is the rescue's newest foster bunny. Dante spent a long time at the shelter near loudly barking dogs and is now enjoying the quiet and peace of her foster home. When Dante began not eating or pottying very much a few days after entering foster care, we rushed her to our most rabbit savvy vet. Her diagnosis is dire. She has a dime sized calculi and multiple other smaller stones in her bladder which require surgery to remove. She also has a multi-lobed lipoma on her shoulder which is benign. Her lab work came back normal, so we are now rallying to collect funds for her stone removal surgery. The surgery will cost $800 which is an overwhelming amount for a little rescue. We are asking for help via donations to offset the surgical costs to make her much more comfortable and help save her life. If you can help please click "contact us" and donate via our paypal button. Every penny counts!

Update 1-28-12: Because of the outporing of support and generosity from so many people, Dante was able to have her surgery today. Her uterine horns were swollen and cystic, but her veterinarian definitely believes they were benign. So, it was excellent to have her spayed at the same time as the stone removal. The vet estimates her age to be only between 1-2 years old. When she opened her bladder all the other 6-7 little stones had already passed which is why she has been feeling much better recently apparently. The huge stone was still there. Her bladder is approximately the size of a quarter. The stone was approximately the size of a dime. She flushed her bladder very well and repeatedly. The vet believes this was related to past improper nutrition of alfalfa based foods which contain too much calcium, prior to being rescued. The rest of her anatomy internally looked very healthy. The next two days will be the most critical to her survival as she recovers from a massive surgery and copes with post op pain levels. She is being monitored closely and given several pain meds as well as a preventative antibiotic. We'll be posting frequent updates on our rescues Face Book Page. "

Rosie- Female Fuzzy Lop- Adoption Status on Hold

Picture
Rosie is a young, female house rabbit who was born in approximately July 2011. She was brought to the county shelter after her owners of only a few weeks decided a rabbit was too much responsibility. We were able to place Rosie immediately into our foster program and upon first assessment noticed she had fleas as well as episodes of nystagmus (rapid, involuntary eye movements). Rosie's foster mom rushed her to the most rabbit savvy vet in the area for an exam and diagnosis. An e. Cuniculi titer was drawn and Rosie was started on a 28 day regiment of Panacur medication for e. Cuniculi as well as given a dose of revolution for the fleas. Rosie is showing her baby bunny energy by exploring in between episodes. She is super soft and is likely a cross between a lop and another wooley breed.

Update 11-22-11: " Rosie still scans (involuntary eye movement) but there are other times where she is at rest and her head stays still. So, we think there is some improvement! She is super active and has really opened up to being pet.  She loves racing through the house at top speeds:) She is also very fond of jumping up on the furniture!"
Update 11-30-11: " While Rosie has shown some improvement it's not as much as we would have hoped. She is able to rest at times without scanning now but she still has frequent episodes. When she feels well she is super active running, leaping and grooming. She loves her daily green salads and being gently pet. Today Rosie will start a 10 day course of antibiotic in hopes that any possible secondary infection will be eradicated."
Update 12-9-11: "Rosie is almost done with her antibiotic and is still scanning at the same frequency. The vet feels this may just be a permanent neurological display. However, baby Rosie doesn't let it get her down. Her favorite thing to do is spring off the furniture!"
Update 1-10-12: " Rosie is doing well. She still scans at the same frequency, but she is very playful and loves to flip and toss her toys, including her litter box!:). Rosie began a second course of Panecur on the 7th. We don't know if it will diminish her scanning symptoms or not, but we are pleased she isn't worse and that she is a happy playful little girl."

Rosie has a long fight ahead of her.  E. Cuniculi requires a long course of treatment to eradicate symptoms, if possible.  We will continue to post baby Rosie updates along her journey.

Sadie- Black Mini Rex Female House Rabbit

Picture
Sadie is a black, female, mini rex, house rabbit. She was spayed 4-12-11! The vet approximates that she was born in 2008 or '09. Her story began when a very kind woman noticed her in a snow bank outside.  Knowing that being abandoned outdoors is a death sentence for domestic rabbits, she brought her inside. Sadie quickly learned to use her litter box and was grateful for the warmth, love and food. Sadie soon showed how much she loves her fresh greens, carrot treats and her hidey hut. The kind woman searched for a rabbit rescue where Sadie could be safe until she found a forever home and brought her to our rescue to be fostered.
Because Sadie had been abandoned outside she developed a severe ear infection in winter 2010 when she first arrived at our rescue. She has been treated and has recovered well.  Sadie is shy at first but does enjoy being cuddled. Her fur is super velvety. She is a very calm bunny but loud noises make her hide in her favorite place: her hidey hut. Sadie loves her fleece blankets. They are very inexpensive and she loves to sleep on them, chew little holes in them, and play with them. She can be nervous of new people that make too many quick movements and noise but she allows those she trusts to play with her and hold her.  Sadie is a foster rabbit of West MI Critter Haven. Her adoption fee is $60 which includes life long house rabbit education and support. For more information on adopting Sadie please contact us. Adopters must be at least 18 years old.
